Description

While sailing, an injury can occur when the boat is far from a place where help is available. Cuts sustained during a maneuver, wounds caused by equipment, or the need for pressure bandaging require immediate access to the appropriate supplies.

The first-aid kit for recreational boats contains all the essential first-aid supplies needed on board in a hard-shell case. It includes, in particular, supplies for treating wounds and bleeding, immobilization and support, hand hygiene, and thermal protection.

A rigid case designed for onboard storage

The case is made of polypropylene, a rigid plastic suitable for manufacturing lightweight and durable storage cases. Its compact size allows the kit to be stored in a locker, a storage compartment, or a designated area for safety equipment.

The handle makes it easy to carry when first aid needs to be administered in another part of the boat.

A kit designed for treating wounds and bleeding

The kit includes several wound care items: adhesive bandages in various sizes, sterile gauze pads, and skin cleansers.

A hemostatic pad completes this kit when bleeding requires greater compression than a standard bandage can provide. It is one of the specific items required in the regulatory composition of the first-aid kit defined by Division 240.

Securing and holding dressings in place

A 4 m × 10 cm roll of gauze and a 4 m × 10 cm roll of cohesive tape complement the compresses and bandages included in the kit.

The cohesive tape adheres to itself and can therefore be used to secure a dressing without requiring adhesive to be applied directly to the skin. A roll of tear-off adhesive tape is also included for securing dressings.

A provision related to Division 240

Division 240 establishes the safety rules applicable to recreational boating at sea for the vessels in question. Article 240-2.19 specifically defines the contents of the first-aid kit, which must include items such as self-adhesive tape, sterile gauze pads, adhesive bandages, a hemostatic pad, adhesive tape, 10 pairs of gloves, hand sanitizer, a survival blanket, and chlorhexidine.

The required equipment must always be verified based on the type of navigation being conducted and the safety equipment applicable to the vessel.

Hard-shell case or waterproof PVC kit?

The polypropylene case is particularly suitable when a stable storage location is provided on board. Its rigid shell keeps the various items organized in a structured container.

For situations requiring greater protection against water or a container that can be easily hung, a waterproof PVC nautical first-aid kit is a more suitable alternative.

Keep the case accessible and check its contents

First-aid supplies should be stored in a location known to the crew and easily accessible. It’s best to avoid a location that requires moving several pieces of equipment before reaching the kit.

Periodic checks also allow you to replace items that have been used or have expired and to verify the overall condition of the kit before setting out on a new voyage.
